European Champions to play FA Cup winners after South African tournament in July



Manchester United is pleased to announce that the first team squad will play an exhibition match in Nigeria in July.


The one-off match against Portsmouth will be the fitting finale to the Tinapa Business Resorts International Soccer Fiesta and will follow on from the team’s participation in the Vodacom Challenge tournament in South Africa.


This is the first visit by Manchester United to Nigeria and the first occasion on which any Barclays Premiers League team has played in West Africa.


David Gill (Chief Executive of Manchester United) said:

Sir Alex and the team are always keen to visit new places and this will provide a great opportunity to let our many fans in Nigeria see our team in the flesh. This match will provide a climax to our summer tour taking in the Vodacom Challenge tournament in South Africa as well as this stop-over in West Africa.”

1 Manchester United is the reigning Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League champions.


2 Manchester United is the most popular team in Nigeria with over 13m fans (some 16% of the population) estimated by TNS Sport to be followers of the club. Of these, some 7.5m are described as core fans.


3 The Manchester United summer tour of Africa from 17th to 29th July 2008 takes in a total of 4 matches, (3 in South Africa as part of the Vodacom Challenge tournament involving the Orlando Pirates and the Kaiser Chiefs in Cape town, Durban and Pretoria) and a single match in Abuja, Nigeria against Portsmouth.
